Furey Family Take Titles at TPC Las Vegas
Future Collegians World Tour (FCWT) junior golf tournament, December 27-28, 2011
Golf is an individual sport. In most settings the player is “on his own.” There are the occasional team competitions and many players have the opportunity at some point to enjoy the camaraderie offered by such tournaments. Junior golf, however, offers another unique opportunity: family fun. Most junior golf tournaments conducted by the Future Collegians World Tour (FCWT), will have at least a couple of sets of siblings involved. On Wednesday at the TPC Las Vegas tournament, there were four families with junior golfers involved. One family had a memory they won’t soon forget. Sixteen year old Hale Furey of Newport Beach, CA (2014) captured his first FCWT junior golf tournament title in the Boys 16-19 division when he finished one stroke ahead of Blake Meek of Pasadena, CA (2013) and CBP Pereira of Cameron Park, CA (2013). Meanwhile, Hale‘s younger brother Chase (2017), won his third FCWT title in the boys 11-13 division by one shot over local favorite, George Kim of Las Vegas, NV (2016). The Furey brothers now head to the FCWT junior golf tournament at PGA West, December 30-31, 2011. Will they be able to repeat? Only time will tell. For the moment, they can savor their victories while they travel. Junior golf really is family golf.
Round Two at TPC Las Vegas saw some good scoring in the Boys 16-19 division. On Tuesday, only overnight leader Dylan Mitchell was under par. On Wednesday, three players posted sub-par rounds:
Blake Meek of Pasadena, CA (2013) posted a 3 under par 68 to earn both the Low Round Honors and finish tied for 2nd; Haley Furey of Newport Beach, CA (2014) fired a 2 under par 69 that earned him his first FCWT junior golf tournament title; and
Nathan Wunderli of Salt Lake City, UT (2012) posted a 1 under par 70 that allowed him to finish in 5th place, his third Top 5 of the season. Two players finished with rounds of even par: Charlie Duensing of Sandy, UT (2014) and
CBP Pereira of Cameron Park, CA (2013), who finished T2. Brandon Baumgarten, Kyler Dunkle, and Scott Munger were at +1 for the final round and finished T10, T10 and T7 respectively. Special congratulations to Chris Hammond of Overland Park, KS (2013) who improved his round score by 14 strokes on Wednesday with a final round of 73. Furey breathed a sigh of relief at the scorer’s table. The 16 year old almost ended up in a three-way playoff on Wednesday when he made double-bogey on his final hole, but his 69 was enough to let him win by one stroke with a tournament score of 142, even par. Furey‘s younger brother, Chase, also won his division by one shot over George Kim. Lots to celebrate tonight for the Furey family. Furey led this division in birdies with 9 for the tournament while Pereira led in pars with 29.
The Boys 13-15 division were firing on all cylinders for the final round of the FCWT junior golf tournament at TPC Las Vegas. On Tuesday, Aaron Whalen of Ephrata, WA (2015)had taken the lead with a round of 71. On Wednesday, as scores began being posted, it was obvious that this division was going down to the wire.
Brett Beazant of Cheshire, UK (2015) fired a 3 under par 68 (after an opening round of 85) creating quite a stir. Ultimately, Brett finished in 7th place.
Henry Leng of West Valley City, UT (2014) also fired a 3 under par 68 (after an opening round of 78). Leng had to await the final groups arrival in the scoring area to learn how he would fare. Leng finished in 3rd place at 146, 3 strokes back of the winner.
Jesse Goldstein of El Dorado Hills, CA (2014) fired a round of 2 under par 69 and came within one stroke of winning his first FCWT junior golf tournament. Goldstein made birdie on his last 2 holes and played his back nine at 3 under par. Ultimately, overnight leader Aaron Whalen of Ephrata, WA (2015) won the title, his first FCWT tournament win of the season, with a final round of one over par 72 to finish at 143 (+1) for the tournament. Excellent scoring by this division.
The TPC Las Vegas Golf Course was in good shape for the FCWT tournament. The greens this time of year are extremely firm making scoring a challenge, but the players were up to the task.
It was a great competition in the Boys 11-13 division.
Chase Furey of Newport Beach, CA (2017) and George Kim of Las Vegas, NV (2016) stuck to each other like glue. At the end of round one, Chase had a one stroke advantage after an opening round of 76. On Wednesday, Furey made double bogey on his very first hole (# 10) and had to battle back from a one shot deficit. Kim made bogey on # 11 to put them even, but then made a double bogey on the par 3, 12th hole to go down 2 strokes. From there, Kim leveled off and made a string of pars on 13 through 18. Furey made birdie on 14, but then made bogey on 17 and 18. After the turn, Furey made another birdie on number 1 while Kim made a par. Two holes later on #3, Furey gave that stroke back to the golf course when he made bogey. Both players made birdie on # 4, then Furey made bogey on # 5. Was the tide turning? Only temporarily. A birdie on # 6 by Chase followed by 2 pars on 7 and 8 while Kim made bogey on # 8 seemed to close the door for Kim. A spark of hope came on # 9, but it wasn’t enough. Furey made bogey and both players finished Round Two at 74, allowing Chase to keep his one stroke advantage and win another FCWT junior golf tournament.
The competition in the Girls division was also close, so close that it required a playoff between overnight leader Amy Hasenoehrl of Lewiston, ID (2013) and FCWT veteran and local favorite Brittany Whatley of Las Vegas, NV (2012). Miss Whatley forced the playoff when she carded a final round of even par 70 which tied her for Low Round Honors with Annie Lee of CANADA (2014) whose round of 70 earned her 3rd place. In the playoff, the players returned to the 18th hole, Amy hit her approach to within 4 feet and made the birdie putt. Brit was about 40 feet and made par. Amy and Annie each had 25 pars to co-lead for this division. Emily Laskin of Elk Grove, CA (2014) led this division in birdies with 8. Miss Laskin finished in 5th place behind Jamie Huo of Kent, WA (2013).
