Ashley captures first FCWT tournament title
Round Two of the junior golf tournament at the Sandpiper Golf Club conducted by the Future Collegians World Tour (FCWT) began with a three-way tie for the lead in the Boys 16-19 division. On Saturday, Matthew Ashley of San Jose, CA (2013),
Blake Meek of Pasadena, CA (2013) and Sean Berardi of Petaluma, CA (2013) all opened with a round of 71. On Sunday, the three were paired together. From the opening hole it was evident that it was going to be a tough day. Ashley made a double bogey 7 on the par 5 first hole. On the 2nd hole, Berardi made a 7 on the par 4 and Meek made a bogey 5. By the turn Ashley and Meek were 2 over for the day, and Berardi was 6 over par. Meanwhile Jonny Hogan of Solvang, CA (2012) who had his own struggles early on during Sunday’s round, had already made his turn and things were starting to go his way. Hogan made birdie-birdie on 10 and 11 before making a string of pars and finishing with a birdie on # 18, thus finishing at even par for the round and moving into 3rd place. One player matched Hogan at even par – RJ Young of Rancho Cucamonga, CA (2013). A 15 shot improvement for Young in Round Two allowed him to finish tied for 22nd. Also tied for 22nd with a 17 shot turn around on Sunday was
Cole Nygren of Longmont, CO (2012). Cole‘s final round of 71 earned him Low Round honors. For Ashley and Meek it came down to the final hole of the day. Matthew, who had made birdie on # 17 to put the two all square, made par, but Blake made a bogey on 18 and dropped to 2nd place. Sixteen year old Ashley earned his first FCWT junior golf tournament win on Sunday giving him reason to celebrate even if he isn’t a Giants or Patriots fan.
