Junior Golf Tournament: FCWT at Inverrary Round One

Sixty-five junior golfers teed it up for Round One of the junior golf tournament at the Inverrary Golf Club conducted by the Future Collegians World Tour (FCWT) on Saturday.  South Florida probably sounds good to many across the country this weekend as a cold front has chilled down much of the nation.  It actually feels like winter in places that have been experiencing the mildest winter on record.

In the Girls division at Inverrary, Juliana Herrera of Bogota (2012) opened with a round of 75 to lead the girls division by 3 strokes.  Miss Herrera, who finished 2nd at the FCWT Naples tournament in November and 6th at the Champions Gate tournament, will be looking for her first win on Sunday.  Juliana will be paired with Alexandra Papell of Boca Raton (2013) and local favorite Carly Goldstein of Coral Springs, FL (2013), who are tied for 2nd place at 78.  Carly and Alexandra co-led this division in pars with 12, while Juliana co-led in birdies with Katerina Luttner of Pittsburgh, PA (2012) Miss Luttner will start tied for 4th with Isabella DiLisio of Hatfield, PA (2015), 4 strokes back of Miss Herrera.  Seven of the 12 junior golfers in this division are within 5 strokes of the lead, setting up a fantastic final round for Sunday.

Leonardo Coll of Fort Lauderdale, FL (2015) fired a one under par 71 on Saturday in the Boys 13-15 division and will have a 4 stroke advantage at the start of Sunday’s final round.  Coll, who is playing in his second season with the Future Collegians World Tour, will be looking for his first FCWT win.  Fifteen-year-old Coll led his division in pars with 15 and co-led in birdies with 2.  The best player with an opportunity to catch Coll on Sunday will be paired with him for the final round.  Thomas Schofield of Barbados (2014) shot a 75 on Saturday and in 2nd place.  Sam Madsen of Pompano Beach, FL (2014) will start in 3rd place at 80.

The 41 junior golfers in the Boys 16-19 division will be chasing Evan DeRoche of Key West, FL (2014) on Sunday.  DeRoche posted an opening round of 74 on Saturday at Inverrary, despite an increasing wind late in his round.  Evan has a one-stroke advantage over Chad Stumpo of Newton, MA, who won the FCWT Naples tournament in November and Jackie Barnes of Stormville (2012), who is playing in his first FCWT junior golf tournament.  Barnes led the division in birdies with 4, while DeRoche led in pars with 14.  Michael Boylan of Patterson, NY (2013), who carded the only eagle during Round One, is tied for 4th place with Tony Gil of CANADA (2016) at 76.  Rodrigo Munoz of Bradenton, FL (2013) and Taylor Funk of Ponte Vedra (2014) are tied for 6th at 77.  Four players are tied for 8th at 78, 4 strokes back of the leader, DeRoche.
