Walk in the Footsteps of Legends
Three first-time winners at the FCWT junior golf tournament at Inverrary
Inverrary seems a fitting place to be this weekend. Many of golf’s greatest legends have played this course. Champions like Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, Lee Trevino, Tom Kite, Hale Irwin and Tom Weiskopf have all won here. Being a legend is a challenge in itself, but being the descendant of a legend can bring with it some really, big shoes. Earlier this week, in the Battle of the Blues as they call it in North Carolina, UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke met at the Dean Dome for an ACC rivalry that has seen its share of legends. On Wednesday night, one young man got to step out of the footsteps of his legendary father and make his own history. As one ESPN sports writer posted on Twitter, “Austin Rivers came to school as Doc’s kid . . . for at least one night- Doc is Austin’s Dad.”
This same phenomenon happens in golf. Junior Golfers follow in the footsteps of their father or grandfather or other family member into the greatest game ever played.
Juliana Herrera wins Girls division on 3rd playoff hole
On Sunday, one young lady took some additional steps on that path.
Carly Goldstein, former FCWT 14 and under National Champion, fired a final round of 74 to earn the Low Round honors and to force a playoff with overnight leader
Juliana Herrera of Bogota (2012). Miss Goldstein would be considered a local favorite at the Inverrary tournament, as the high school junior lives in nearby Coral Springs and her father, Barry Goldstein, is a local teaching pro at Inverrary and Carly’s coach. So while the playoff outcome may not have been what Carly hoped for (Juliana won on the 3rd playoff hole), it was certainly another step forward in her golfing career. For Juliana, the win was her first in an FCWT junior golf tournament. Juliana previously finished 2nd at the FCWT junior golf tournament at Naples and 6th at FCWT tournament at Champions Gate. Behind Carly, finishing in 3rd place was Maria Rodriguez of Cali (2013).
The cold front that pushed through the East Coast yesterday made it all the way to South Florida. Temperatures for Sunday’s rounds were in the 40′s. Some of the girls said they were cold until the final two holes of play.
Evan DeRoche wins Boys 16-19 division – his first win
In the Boys 16-18 division at Inverrary, Evan DeRoche maintained his first round lead, carded a final round of 75 and won his first FCWT junior golf tournament. DeRoche of Key West, FL (2014) entered this tournament having previously finished tied for 4th at Reunion. The 16 year old DeRoche co-led in birdies with 5. Chad Stumpo of Newton, MA, and Michael Boylan of Patterson, NY (2013) finished tied for 2nd at 154. Jonathan Newnham of Kingston (2013) finished tied for 4th with Ray Boone of Miami, FL (2013) at 156.
Leonardo Coll captures first title in the Boys 13-15 division
In the Boys 13-15 division, Leonardo Coll of Fort Lauderdale, FL (2015) also captured his first FCWT junior golf tournament title despite a round start to his round. Coll was assessed a two-stroke penalty for being late for his tee time. Nevertheless, he posted a solid round of 77 and won by 7 strokes over Thomas Schofield of Bridgetown, Barbados (2014), while leading this division in both pars with 27 and birdies with 4 for the tournament. Tyler Sloman of Miami (2014) finished in 3rd place at 161.
