Future Collegians World Tour (FCWT) Junior Golf Tournament at Newport National
Middletown, RI: The opening round of the FCWT Junior Golf Tournament at Newport National was delayed due to fog. Once play got underway, things heated up quickly, especially for Danny Guise.
Seventeen year old Guise of Greenwich, CT (2013) carded 7 birdies on his way to an opening round of 6 under par 66 on Saturday. Guise, who is playing in his 4th season of FCWT junior golf tournaments, finished in 2nd place at this tournament last season with rounds of 72-74. The 5′ 11″ senior will enter Sunday’s final round with a 6 shot lead over Jeremy Paton of Victor, NY (2013) and Jackson Lang of Lexington, MA (2015). Lang’s score leads the tournament for those player in the Boys 13-15 category. Lang, a 3rd year FCWT player, finished tied for 7th at this tournament last season with rounds of 82-75. Seventeen year old Paton is also a 3rd season veteran of the FCWT. Paton finished tied for 10th at this junior golf tournament in 2011 with rounds of 77-76.
Matthew Naumec of Wilbraham, MA (2015) is at +1 (73) and in 4th place. Naumec, now 16, finished tied for 3rd in the Boys 13-15 division last season. Four players are tied for 5th at 74: Devin Solar of West Nyack (2013), Eddy Black of Shrewsbury, MA (2014), Jake Bauer of Portsmouth, RI (2014) and Tyler Stagg of White Plains (2013).
Michael VanDerLaan of Southbury, CT (2015) had the second best score on Saturday in the Boys 13-15 division. Michael is tied for 17th overall. Rasmey Kong of North Haven, CT (2015) carded a 78 on Saturday which was the 3rd best score among the 13-15 division. He is tied for 20th overall.
In the Girls division,
Megan Khang of Rockland, MA (2015), who won this tournament in 2011 by 8 strokes, is looking to defend her title. On Saturday, Megan opened with a 75 and leads
Lauren Thibodeau of Hampstead, NH (2018) by 9 strokes. Kristin Powers of Rochester, NY (2013) and Amy Ding of Lexington, MA (2015) are tied for third place at 85.
