The FCWT Junior Golf Tournament Sandpiper 2019 is taking place February 16-17, 2019. Junior golfers are playing 36 holes of stroke play at the Sandpiper Golf Club near Santa Barbara, CA. This is one of the FCWT junior golf tournaments on the 2018-2019 schedule.
Round One of the FCWT Junior Golf Tournament Sandpiper 2019
Much of California has had an inordinate amount of rain in the last few weeks. One winter storm after another has made landfall showering the Golden State with much-needed rain. So much so that many areas of California are no longer in drought conditions. For the second weekend in a row, the weather is playing a major factor in a FCWT junior golf tournament.
On Friday the overcast skies and rain made for very soggy conditions for the practice round. The sun did come out shortly before the end of registration on Friday and thankfully Saturday’s round got underway under sunny skies.
It didn’t take long for the junior golfers to realize that even though it wasn’t raining, the golf course is wet! So wet that any errant shot becomes twice as difficult as normal. And the closer you get to the Ocean on the Sandpiper Golf Course the more the wind also plays a factor in every shot you take.
Dalfonsi Leads Girls Division
In the Girls Division of the FCWT Junior Golf Tournament Sandpiper 2019, Sophie Dalfonsi of Bend, OR (2021) is out to the early lead. Sophie carded an opening round of 79. Fifteen-year-old Sophie finished 14th at Half Moon Bay in January. She will start the Final Round with a 7 shot lead over Nicole Iniakov of Salinas, CA (2025). Nicole carded 1 birdie during Saturday’s round and Sophie carded 2.

Three junior golfers will start the final round at 74. They share third place. One of the junior golfers, Costas Panay of Redwood, WA (2019) made an eagle on the 5th hole during Saturday’s Round.
Panay also made bookend birdies during his opening round.
Another junior golfer at 74 is Wyatt McGovern of Hillsborough, CA (2021). Fifteen-year-old Wyatt opened with a birdie on his first hole.
He made the turn at three-over-par. After struggling a bit on 10 and 11 where he made bogey-bogey, he got hot and made 4 consecutive birdies on 12, 13, 14, and 15.
Fourteen-year-old Willy Walsh of San Mateo, CA (2023) is also on 74. Walsh finished in 2nd place at Half Moon Bay in the Boys 12-14 division. This weekend he is playing the 15-19 division and doing it well. Walsh played each nine at one-over par (37-37).
