Final Round of the FCWT Junior Golf Tournament Monarch 2019

It took a playoff to determine the first winner of the FCWT Junior Golf Tournament Monarch 2019. Monarch Bay is a new venue on the 2019 schedule. At the end of 36 holes, 14-year-old Leonardo Vieira of Castro Valley, CA (2023) and 14-year-old Willy Walsh of San Mateo, CA (2023) were tied at 146. Leonardo carded rounds of 76-71 and Willy posted 72-74. They headed back to the first hole for the playoff. Leo made a 21-foot birdie putt for the win. Previously his best FCWT finish was T9 at Half Moon Bay in January. After his win, Leonardo thanked his parents for bringing him to the tournament. (Thank you parents! Junior golf wouldn’t exist without you).

Walsh finished 2nd in the Boys 12-14 division at Half Moon Bay. Then he finished T9 in the Boys 15-19 division at Sandpiper in February. Leonardo moved up 7 spots on the leaderboard on Sunday. Willy moved up 3.

Also moving up the leaderboard Jalen Xing of Cupertino, CA (2021). Jalen moved up 4 spots with a final round of 73. He finished T3 with overnight leader Jeremy Yun of Menlo Park, CA (2021). Fifteen-year-old Xing had his best 2 FCWT rounds of the season with scores of 74-73-147. Yun faltered a bit on Sunday after firing an opening round of 69, but the 16-year-old from Menlo Park, CA (2021) will be back; we feel certain.

Scout McNealy of Portola Valley, CA (2019) rounded out the Top 5. McNealy had a tough string of holes on 14, 15, 16 and 17, but finished strong with a birdie on 18.

Also noteworthy, Kyle Wesolowski moved up 4 spots on Sunday at the FCWT Junior Golf Tournament Monarch 2019.

Girls Division

The Girls division went all the way down to the wire. Natalie Vo of San Jose, CA (2021) and Tina Xu of Los Altos, CA (2022) began the final round as co-leaders. Both young ladies posted an opening round of 75. On Sunday, they played together and each made par on the first three holes. On the 4th hole, Tina made a double bogey, when Natalie made a par. But Tina bounced back and made a par on #5, matching Natalie. Then on #6, Tina made a birdie. Natalie made another par, her 6th in as many holes. Natalie kept her par streak going on #7, but Tina gave one back to the course. On the 8th hole, Natalie made her first bogey of the day while Tina made par.

They both made par on #9 then made the turn at 36 and 37 with Natalie leading by one. That would be the difference in the round. Tina made a birdie on 10, while Natalie made par. They both made par on 11. Then on 12 Natalie made a bogey and Tina made a par. But no sooner was Tina back in it then she made bogey-bogey on 13 and 14 and Natalie made par-birdie. They both made par on 15 and 16, then Natalie made bogey on 17. Both young ladies made bogey on the final hole to card 38 for the back nine. Well played by both.

Maya Shosh of Santa Clara (2020) moved up a spot to finish in 3rd place. Sloane Bayer of Fresno, CA (2020) moved up 3 spots and finished T4 with Olivia Guo of Los Altos, CA (2021) at the FCWT Junior Golf Tournament Monarch 2019.
