The Playoff

If that were not enough, we also had a 5-hole playoff. Our Round One leader, Mitchell Hoey of Alamo, CA (2021) had to battle all day to earn his win in the Boys 15-19 division. Mitchell teed off for Round Two with a one shot lead after an opening round of 71. On the 1st hole, he made a bogey and Michael Burry, who was one stroke back of Hoey made a birdie. Both players made birdie on #2. Then Mitchell made another bogey on #5. Hoey was able to battle back and make a birdie on 7, but then made a bogey on 9 while Burry made a birdie on 8. So at the turn, Hoey was on 38 and Burry was on 34.

On the back nine, things began to change. Both players made par on 10, then Mitchell made a birdie on 11 while Burry made a par. On 12, Mitchell made a par and Burry made a bogey. Then Mitchell made a bogey on 13 and Burry made a par. Both made bogey 6 on the 14th hole (meanwhile Braxton Watts who teed off at 9:09 was tearing up the golf course. Watts made one bogey and 4 birdies on the front nine to make the turn at 34. Then he made 4 birdies on the back nine and carded 31).

Burry made birdie on the 18th and Hoey made a solid putt for par to force a playoff to which Watts also joined. Watts made par on the first playoff hole while Hoey and Burry made birdies. But on the 5th playoff hole (#18) Hoey chipped in for an eagle and the win!

And More . . .

Also noteworthy, Akira Isayama of Palo Alto, CA (2020) made an eagle on the 18th hole during Round Two. Nicholas Watts of Springfield (2021) and Orlando Coons of Reno, NV (2022) finished in a tie for 5th place with Jacob Mason. Joey Hayden of Dublin, CA (2022), who led this division in pars with 28, finished in a tie for 8th with Isayama and Jack Deaner of Sacramento, CA (2021).
